Hollywood Beach History
Located approximately halfway between Malibu and Santa Barbara on Southern California’s “gold coast,” Hollywood Beach is one of three beach communities within Western Ventura County’s Oxnard area. The other beaches are known as Mandalay Shores or Oxnard Shores (these are two names for the same beach) and Silver Strand Beach.
Real estate in Hollywood Beach, CA has drawn savvy buyers for decades. The community is named Hollywood Beach due to it being a location used for the entertainment industry beginning in the 1910s. The sand dunes, naturally occurring on what is now known as Hollywood Beach, helped Hollywood producers and set designers create vistas that appeared to be egyptian deserts, and kept travel costs to a minimum. In 1921, Italian entertainer Rudolph Valentino starred in the motion picture The Sheik, which was filmed on the beach in this Oxnard community. Following the success of The Sheik, local landowners and Los Angeles developers partnered to enter into the real estate business in Hollywood Beach, CA, by selling beach front and beach area lots and marketing them to communities throughout Greater Los Angeles. In homage to the area being used for location filming and the developers’ goal of attracting both entertainment industry executives and film fans who might want to live alongside famed locales, the streets that run perpendicular to Ocean Drive were named for communities in and around Los Angeles.

The beach itself is deep, offering a wide sandy beach area between the oceanfront homes and the shoreline. Lifeguards are stationed on the beach from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Sunsets are gorgeous year round, but are known to be especially spectacular and colorful in the autumn months. On Sundays, many residents walk across Harbor Boulevard to the Channel Islands Farmers’ Market, open weekly from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The Market has organic offerings, fruit, vegetables, flowers, art, gifts and fresh seafood. There is often live entertainment.
